Black History Month 2023: Black Resistance

Black History Month, otherwise known as African American History Month, is an annual celebration in the United States that recognizes the history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans every February.

The observation of Black History Month dates to 1915, when historian and author Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. In February 1926, he launched the celebration of a historic week dedicated to teaching the cultural significance of the history of Black Americans. Under President Gerald Ford’s leadership in 1976, the week-long observance was officially extended to a month. Every U.S. president since has designated the month of February as Black History Month.

Black Resistance

The 2023 theme for Black History Month is ‘Black Resistance,’ exploring the ways in which Black people have resisted historic and ongoing oppression and discrimination. It also recognizes and honors those who supported Black education and civil rights movements.

Although we do not need a designated time to celebrate Black history, the month is set aside to bolster discussions surrounding African Americans who have helped shape the nation. A great way to carry on their legacies is by attending a local parade, festival, or other forms of Black History Month celebrations. Check out Jacksonville initiatives here.

CSI Companies will hold a booth at the Florida Black Expo on February 10th at TIAA Bank Field. Come say hello and help promote minority-owned businesses across the First Coast.
