As we welcome the month of July, CSI celebrates Disability Pride Month! This annual observance, held every July, shines a light on the achievements, struggles, and unique perspectives of individuals with disabilities. It is a time to celebrate the strength, courage, and resilience of individuals who have overcome societal barriers and who continue to fight for a world that is more inclusive, accessible, and welcoming to all.
Disability Pride Month was first celebrated in 1990, inspired by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law on July 26th of that year. Since then, it has grown into a global movement, recognized by countries around the world as an opportunity to amplify the voices of individuals with disabilities and advocate for change.
At the heart of Disability Pride Month is a message of acceptance and empowerment. For too long, individuals with disabilities have faced stigma, discrimination, and prejudice in the workplace, in schools, and within society at large. But through this observance, we are reminded that disability is not something to be ashamed of but rather a natural part of the human experience that deserves respect, recognition, and celebration.
As we celebrate Disability Pride Month 2024, let us honor the experiences and achievements of individuals with disabilities while also committing ourselves to creating a more inclusive and accessible world for all. Let us celebrate the diversity and strength of the disabled community and support each other in our journey toward equity and justice!
